The difference between turbocharger and mechanical supercharger
2022-01-07 09:33Turbochargers and superchargers are part of the two and are both classified as
superchargers. Supercharger has the function of supplying pressurized air to the
engine to improve the output power of the engine. Turbocharger and mechanical
supercharger are to provide power for the engine, but because of the different
performance, their advantages and disadvantages are different, so according to
the use of appropriate use.
A supercharger has a part called a compressor, which compresses air. The
compressor works by rotating. Turbocharger and mechanical turbocharger
compressor rotation mechanism are different, distinguishing the advantages and
disadvantages of both.
Turbochargers use the flow rate of gas (exhaust gas) from the engine as energy.
The exhaust gas is received by windmill-like parts called turbines, and the rotational
energy obtained by rotating the turbine is transmitted to the compressor. As the waste
gas that is no longer needed becomes energy, it can power the engine efficiently.
However, when the engine speed is low, the flow of exhaust gas is insufficient, and the
turbocharger can not play a great role as the power of the turbocharger. With the
increase of number of revolutions and the increase of flow velocity, momentum gradually
play, but for the driver, even if the throttle also has no power at the beginning, then
dynamic emerging, it feels like time lag is known as turbo lag in the latest car. This kind
of turbo lag has been suppressed, even under the low speed can exert its power. Older
turbocharged cars often experience this kind of turbo lag, but many fans like to keep it
as a taste.
The supercharger uses the rotational force of the crankshaft inside the engine.
The rotation of the crankshaft is transmitted to the compressor by belts, etc. Since
the crankshaft revolution is the engine revolution, the supercharger is pressurized
as long as the engine is running. Therefore, it can exert its power even at low revs,
and because it is related to the engine speed, there is no turbo lag like the
turbocharger mentioned above.
On the other hand, because it uses the rotational energy of the crankshaft, it is less
efficient than turbochargers that use exhaust energy that is no longer needed. In
addition, many models use turbochargers instead of mechanical superchargers
because of the noise and high cost of running.
